Anime in Focus: Devil May Cry episode 4

<-This episode introduces Trish, another Devil hunter, like Dante. notice the leather. It gets approval.

Well, ye local anime club seems to like this anime a lot. I personally prefer my action series to have a bit more action, but that is their issue, not mine.

This episode starts off with Lady killing some no name demon. The important part is when some blonde chick in tight leather shows up and starts duking it out with lady. Apparently other Devil May Cry fans in the room recognized her as Trish, but I haven’t really played the games, so I didn’t know anything about her. The fight ends with no conclusive winner, but a lot of property damage.

We then skip to Dante, who is reading a fashion magazine, because he lost another bet, and apparently has to buy that girl he adopted a cute outfit. During this, Lady comes in and tries to get some information out of Dante regarding the crazy lightning lady, but gets nothing out of him. Dante clearly knows something, but isn’t telling for the sake of new people. Like me. Later, Lady and Trish find out that they both shop at the same boutique, for those of us that care. At least their damaging each other’s clothes, which is always a plus.

Anyways, later the person who hired lady to kill Trish is bugging her about the lack of progress, and wants her to get the job done faster. This leads to Trish barging in and giving a moderately interesting fight (better than the ones Dante has been in, sadly.) This leads to an unsurprising plot twist, an unsurprising fight, and me wanting a little bit of suspense out of the show. Alas, I still have little trouble predicting where a fight is going to go in this series, and it makes things a bit boring.

Well, now that I’ve come this far, I might check out more episodes of the series later to see if it gets more interesting. Maybe

Anime in Focus: Devil May Cry episode 3

This episode is available for FREE on Funimation's website HERE

Well, after an okay first couple of episodes, This show has managed to do nothing but make me wanna go play some video game that features Dante and go dish out some real carnage against some demons that don’t die in two hits. Alas, part of being in an anime club is that you are never 100% in charge of what you get to watch.

Well, we get to episode 3, which starts out with me thinking this is some shoujo. We meet some guy, who meets some girl, they fall in love in like 10 seconds. Hopefully one of them turns out to be a demon and eats the other one, or maybe they’ll die horribly, right? This is supported by the fact that the dude has magical powers, lending itself to that type of plot.

Meanwhile, we cut to the girl’s father, who has hired Dante to assassinate the dide, because he doesn’t like him. Dante is hesitant, because he sees no convincing evidence that the guy is a devil, and Dante doesn’t kill humans. Dante goes out to confront the guy, which leads to a lot of chit-chat, until they finally go into a back alley. Is he going to attempt to attack Dante? No, because he knows who Dante is. While this does mean the man is smart, it does not lead to a fight. He then asks Dante about his parents, since Dante is half demon half human, wondering about the possibility between devils and humans.

Realizing that this guy is neither a very good devil nor a threat to humanity, Dante then reports to his boss in order to give him the finger. This leads to a fight with the great demon Belphegor! He, I recognize that name; he must be really powerful and will probably put up a good fight….. nope, wait, he’s dead already. Shoot, and I was all exited upon hearing such a recognizable name.

Well, episode was kind of cute, but demon slaying was disappointing. Unfortunately, the overall presentation seems to lack the badassery that the source material delivers.

Anime in Focus: Devil May Cry Episode 2

<- This episode kinda puts in Lady from Devil May Cry 3, but she doesn't really do much interesting stuff. Sad, I know

Previous episode

This episode is brought to you for free by Funimation HERE

Alright, after an acceptable introduction episode, we have Dante back at his demon hunting business, Devil May Cry, except now with a little girl he wound up adopting during the course of the previous episode. Although this does not seem befitting of a badass demon slayer like Dante, the author’s decided they needed something to round off his character to balance out the sheer badassery he normally emits. If his villains were half as badass as him, we might have an interesting show.

Episode 2 starts with Dante’s comrade from Devil May Cry 3, Lady killing some weird demon. This guy was a throw away of course, for the sole purpose of making Lady look more badass, and to introduce her for the later part of the episode.

Lady ends up at the Devil May Cry telling Dante about a new job. Dante is not amused, apparently due to a history of doing jobs for Lady that don’t end well. Unfortunately for Dante, she manages to trick him into taking on the job she has set up for him, which is weeding out a demon amongst some motorcycle racers. This leads to Dante taking on one of the guys in a race, whose brother was killed in one of these races. The two of them race, but Dante is too badass for a helmet, and the other guy just assumes that because Dante is a total badass, he shouldn’t have to wear a helmet either.

During this race, Dante unsurprisingly encounters a demon on a bridge. Unsurprisingly, Dante kicks it’s ass while causing a lot of collateral damage.

Overall, while this show is kind of interesting, it is sort of riding on its license. It lacks any real suspense, and while this episodes fight scenes were more interesting than the ones in the previous episode, they still weren’t nearly as exiting as the cinematics in the games. I still wouldn’t recommend this series to anybody but a die-hard Devil May Cry fan.

Anime in Focus: Devil May Cry episode 1

<-It should be noted that while Dante is a total badass, his enemies are not

This show is available legally here
Because Funimation is significantly cooler than you.

Alright, the first episode of Devil May Cry. It starts off with our resident badass, Dante, entering a bar, then kicking ass. This is unsurprising simply because Dante ALWAYS kicks ass. Unfortunately, suspense is in short supply, because Dante’s half demon heritage makes him mostly bulletproof. It should be noted that he has an arsenal of unbreakable weapons that he is highly capable of kicking ass with. This gives the anime the overall suspense level of a Bruce Lee movie.

Anyways, the rest of this episode is about Dante protecting a little girl who is supposed to be inheriting a fortune. Apparantly, some of her conniving family members have enlisted some demonic help to ensure that the fortune goes to them instead of her. Meanwhile, Dante has to get her to some place before a certain time for her to be able to inherit this fortune. Along the way they get attacked by a demonic truck, a demon on a train, and demonic opera singers. While the last one is pretty interesting, most fights seem to lack any danger factor.

In the end, Dante winds up being forced to adopt the girl and keep her at Devil May Cry, most likely to develop him a bit later. I’m curious as to how child services would feel about Dante taking care of a kid, due to his ridiculous lifestyle, but alas, I’m sure they’d be way too busy filling out paperwork.

Overall, I recommend this series if you want a fix of Devil May Cry because you’ve played the games way too much, or because they keep kicking your ass. Sadly, the fights do not have nearly as much energy as the fights in the games, and don’t last nearly as long. As an action series, it’s kind of okay, but at least Funimation released it for free.
