Anime in focus: School days episode 12

*shuddering* I heard about this on the internet. But seeing it is totally different. After watching these characters for 11 episodes, and seeing an ending like this is a totally different experience. I mean AHHH.

*sitting on coach at therapists office*

Oh right, of course doctor, what happened. Uhm well, it was Christmas time, and Saionji had made Itou a nice dinner to celebrate with him. She appears stressed out, but moderately exited to be carrying Itou’s baby.

Unfortunately, he cancels on their dinner. After an intense grilling, she finds out that he’s with Katsura, his first love, once again. Yes, apparently Itou has “feelings” for Katsura, and he wants to come back to her. This is, of course, after he slept with almost every girl in the school, and even got one pregnant.

He comes back home to find the dinner Saionji prepared, smashed on the floor. He seems mostly indifferent to this, seeing the complete monster he’s become. I couldn’t tell if he was trying to get back with Katsura because he wanted her, or just because she was the only one left that hasn’t slept with him (Saionji wasn’t registering on his radar apparently.)

After declaring his undying love for Katsura (BLECH) he texts Saionji telling her about an abortion clinic Katsura knew of. The next day, Saionji asks to see him at his house.

What ensued? I believe it was the most delightful melodramatic mess that I’ve ever seen in an anime. It stuck with me for a couple days, and afterwards I just sat staring at the screen with my jaw ajar. I felt like vomiting immediately after viewing. AWESOME ending, really, beats the crap out of the usual climax in this type of anime.

I seriously doubt I could recreate that here though, hehehe. Nice Boat indeed.

Anime in focus: School days episode 11

Almost to the conclusion of this series. This episode shows some flashbacks giving us a general idea of just how far the series has gone since it’s first few episodes, and how it went from a cutesy high school love triangle to the most depraved drama I’ve ever seen.

Ah, well, Itou hasn’t slept with everybody yet. There’s still Katusara and that girl on the basketball team. There were a few other gilrs, but he sleeps with all of them at once in this episode, just to show us that he’s going to grow up to act like Glen Quagmire.

Meanwhile, Itou’s actions start coming around full circle in this episode. To start Saionji reveals that she missed her period…

DUN DUN DUN

On the other side, Katsura’s been talking into a dead cell phone while in a rather creepy trance.

And while it is implied that Itou had a filthy foursome in this episode, his various flings start ignoring the bastard after word about Saionji gets around. Poetic justice really. Itou’d grown cold and heartless over the episodes, and no longer cares for the women he sleeps with (still don’t see what they see in him.) At the end, we’re given a flashback of the beginning, back when he cared. It’s kind of sad really. Not sad enough to make me emphasize with somebody who gets that much sex, but you know, sad. I’d punch him in reality of course. He has turned into a major dick after all. Like Light Yagami from Death Note, but instead of becoming numb to killing people, he’s become numb to sleeping with them.

Now then, I’m going to watch the last episode. Can’t wait to see the climax to all of this, because there is no way this will end well.

Anime in Focus: School Days episode 10

 <- Well, she may look like she's in middle school, but she's in the same grade as Itou. Since Itou has slept with almost every other girl with a name, guess who's next?

Ah, our little train wreck is about to happen. Itou finally breaks up with Katsura. Brutally I might add. He then kisses Setsuna in front of her. It should be noted that during the episode, Katsura mentioned something about a nice boat.

After this, Itou goes about sleeping around with most the other female characters with names. Katsura isn’t taking this all very well, as seen in the scene where she’ standing in the kitchen, looking depressed, and her eyes start going towards the set of knives sitting on the counter (Why yes, I am serious)

I like where this is going.

Meanwhile, Itou hasn’t been having as much filthy sex with Saionji anymore. In fact he seems to be paying more attention to Otome, the girl he want to middle school with, and slept with in the last episode. This is because Itou sleeps with women in the same fashion I eat Cheez-its… he can’t just stop at one.  

Meanwhile, the basketball team is having a farewell party. Saionji is invited. Unfortunately, this party turns out to be a setup for a  tape showing everybody who had sex in the backroom during the school festival. This causes some screaming, especially from Saionji, who sees Itou sleeping with Otome.

Meanwhile, Katsura’s been wandering around like a zombie for some reason. It’s kind of creepy, really.

This has me exited for the next episode, since everything looks like it’s on the verge of exploding in the most horrible ways possible.

Anime in Focus: School Days episode 9

 <- Meet Otome, Itou's fling during this episode

Have you ever gotten that feeling where, you’re watching a bunch of people fight, but you’re not really rooting for them? You know, it’s dramatic, but all you’re here is to see how badly people get hurt? That about sums this anime up. I can’t really root for the main character at this point, in much the way I can’t root for Bella in Twilight. I honestly don’t really want him to get a happily ever after. In fact, I’d take great pleasure in watching horrible things happen to him.

Oh yeah, things get a bit more heated in this episode. Although it’s not as interesting as episodes 4 and 5, I’m just so used to it in this series. Im this episode, Itou can’t keep his hands off Saionji, which leads to him getting kicked off the staff from the school festival for a while.

Meanwhile, we have the school dance. Apparently, there’s one of those teenage rumors going around about how if you go to this dance with somebody, you’ll never break up with them. For some reason about 3 or 4 girls wind up asking Itou out to this dance (What’s his appeal?) Strangely enough, Itou still can’t make up his mind on who he wants to take. Either the chick that’s madly in love with him, the one he’s having filthy sex with on a regular basis, or that girl who just confessed her feelings to him.

Well, after she confesses her feelings for him, rather than saying he’s taken, he decides to take her around the school festival like she wants. Saionji finds out about this and scolds him about it. You can smell his lack of remorse in his actions, and you can almost see the slime dripping off of Itou as he goes through the rest of the episode.

Also, some crazy stuff happens, but I’m kind of unphased at this point. But you could cut the tension between the characters with a knife. I’m exited to see it all explode eventually!

Anime in Focus: School Days episode 8

Hm… pace hasn’t been kept up for the last couple of episodes.

I guess they had to stretch the plot a bit to fill 12 episodes. This episode takes some time to pretend this is a light romance series. I’m not going to fall for it though, too much **** has happened in the last few episodes, so I refuse to believe it’s going to calm down. You can FEEL the bloody tension between the characters, this episode just takes time to show them in their off time.

In this episode, Setsuna decides to pull Itou aside and find out if he’s really after Katsura or Saionji. He says he loves Saionji in the most spineless manner possible, which makes me want to pimpsmack the boy more than usual. Doesn’t help that he’s still listening as Katsura tries her best to please him, rather than dump her already.

Oh yeah, and something about a school festival. It leads to a rather silly scene with some mascots taking on hoards of zombies. It’d be funnier in another series though, since this series doesn’t really put you in the mood for silly antics. Don’t get me wrong, I like that kind of stuff, but it’s about as welcome as a clown in a WWII movie.

Stuff gets a little crazy towards the end, and we find out Setsuna’s going to move to France…

And stuff gets real…ish at the end, but not as real as it usually gets.

Anime in Focus: School Days episode 7

This episode isn’t nearly as interesting as the last one. I will admit, this show’s been heating up a lot, so it’s REALLY hard to keep up with the pace.

In this episode, Katsura is deluding herself into believing that she is still dating Itou, despite him and Saionji mostly ignoring her. Itou still lacks the spine to properly dump her.

This episode shows us how unattractive a harem lead really is. Itou has no spinal column, which prevents him from stopping Saionji’s friend Setsuna from pushing him around. He still won’t admit to anybody but Saionji that he’s done with Katsura, and sits by and watches while Katsura’s classmates make fun of her for being loyal to him. On one hand, it’s really ensickening to watch, but on the other, it’s fun to see the usual laws of harem anime get inverted. It is both delicious and amuses me

Instead of having two girls fawning over one guy and still being friends for some reason, Saionji and Katsura stopped hanging out over this fiasco. Not once do we hear them act like their fine with him hanging around the other girl. I like this because of how much sense this course of action makes.

Oh yeah, in this episode we see Saionji in an awesome maid outfit.

Anime in Focus: School Days Episode 6

 <-Itou x Saionji. There's no way this is going to end well

Well, last episode ending with Itou making passionate love to Saionji while Katsura sat at home not knowing. By this episode, Itou and Saionji are doing it practically every night, sometimes with Saoinji sleeping over.

Awww yes, I approve of the direction this show is taking.

This show does seem to suck…. AT DISSAPOINTING! Itou is such a sleazy jerk that watching him is like watching a trainwreck… you just can’t turn away despite how much damage he’s causing. Saionji is REALLY feeling guilty for cheating on her best friend, and really wants to tell her because of how much she is afraid to hurt her.

Meanwhile, Katsura is trying to figure out why Itou’s been acting so distant lately. It’s kinda sad to watch her. She’s giving it her all, and yet her boyfriend is cheating on her behind her back. She’s doing her best to attempt to fix their relationship, making him a scarf, making lunch for him, while Itou is busy having dirty sex with Saionji. They make out behind Saoinji’s work, Saionji spends the night at Itou’s, They making out on the school roof where Itou used to make out with Katsura. Itou’s even taken to lying to her in order to hang out with Saionji more. Still don’t see what’s so attractive about this guy though.

Maybe I should feel bad for enjoying this so much.

Alas, for some reason or another, another girl seems interested in Itou. At this point, Katsura decides to stick up for him and tell everybody that she’s dating him… Poor girl doesn’t have a clue what’s going on in the background.

Unfortunatly, due to the fast pacing this series has, I wasn’t THAT surprised by the ending. I am a bit exited about where this is going, though, hehehe

Anime in Focus: School Days Episode 5

<-Although this episode contained many detailed swimsuit scenes, I was not really that interested in them. Honest, I just wanted to get on with the incredibly juicy plot.

Previous Episode

Well, this show is actually quite addicting. I really felt compelled to finish it before I went on to watch another anime on my own.

Well, after Itou nearly bumps uglies with Saionji in the previous episode, we now have the pool episode. I notice a LOT of detail in certain… areas… yeah

Well, after Itou does some flirting with Katsura, Saionji calls him a pervert while sulking in a corner. Their affection for each other is obviously bothering her a lot. But what really scares her is when Itou suggests that the “practice” a bit more, like the total sleazebag that he is. Gah, this guy bugs me. What’s his secret? I want it.

Oh yeah, the pool stuff ranges from eh, to pretty interesting. Jokes about boobies, standard pool episode stuff. Saionji needs to pull Itou aside and tells him about how they were only “practicing” and that they’re only friends, and he should be focusing on Katsura. Solid advice really, because I don’t know a girl who would like to hear what their boyfriends been doing behind their back with her best friend…

Honestly, to get to the good parts, just skip to part B, the first part is kinda boring. Second part is great, since the plot actually advances.

Well, the important part of this episode is in the last 5 minutes or so, after Itou says his goodbyes to Katsura. Then…. THIS **** GETS REAL AGAIN

Man this show loves to have awesome episode endings. I should be getting some sleep for tomorrow, but one more episode can’t hurt…..

I understand that last time I complained that stuff didn’t get real in the last episode.

Well, in this episode, THIS STUFF GETS REAL

This episode begins with that sleazy pervert Itou making out with Katsura, then copping a feel…. And then…

She runs off. Later that night she tells Saionji about it, along with the rest of her romantic fantasies. In this episode we learn that Katsura is apparently a romantic idealist, and that she really wants the mood to be right before she does something. And that both Katsura and Saionji are probably virgins.

Now then, after hearing about Itou’s fiasco with Katsura, Saionji tries to help Itou in the best way she knows how… by showing him an example of how to come onto somebody… waitaminute, this looks an awful lot like a date! They go off and do Karaoke, investigate romantic areas in the vicinity, you know, things you do on a date…

While Katsura sits by feeling guilty because she wasn’t able to satisfy Itou…

Well, during this “practice,” as Saionji calls it, things get interesting. Go watch the episode for details. I can’t really recreate the impact or meaning behind what’s going on here, since this type of thing needs to be seen to be understood, Go on, start watching this series. Now. I mean right now. Close this window and go to Netflix.

Anime in Focus: School Days Episode 3

Hm, this episode isn’t nearly as interesting as the last couple. Stuff doesn’t get real at any point in this one. I was very disappointed, because in the first couple episodes stuff got real.

Now then, I’m not really familiar with Japanese dating customs, but by American standards, I’d say Saionji is definitely trying to sabotage Itou and Katsura’s relationship. While the three of them are having lunch, their Katsura and Itou are flirting, and Saionji tells them they need to slow down, even though sparks are flying between the two ot them. Anyway, Itou gets invited to Katsura’s house.

The plot with Saionji and Katsura is kinda boring for the rest of the episode. What isn’t boring is Saionji’s work uniform. Holy crap man. Even 10 minutes after I watched this episode, that’s all I really remember.

Oh yeah, Itou goes to Katsura’s house, and meets her sister or something.

Then we see Saionji talking with one of her friends about whether or not she like Itou. Of course she does, but she ain’t admitting to it. Oh yeah, did I mention her work uniform?

Well, hopefully the next episode is as interesting as the first two. And I’m exited for when the **** hits the fan.

The Big Review: School Days (Nice boat edition)

 <- The Exact opposite of what this series is about

Wow, that went by quickly. I think now would be the best time to write about this, since I’m still a bit shook up over the ending. Great ending, but most disturbing thing I’ve seen.

This starts out about the story of a boy, who falls in love with a girl, and gets help from his female classmate to hook up with said girl. He hits it off with her, and they are having a nice relationship.

Wait, something’s wrong here… The guy is in a happy stable relationship with the girl? Already? It’s only been three episodes… that’s weird… most series don’t get this far till at least half way through.

Well, actually, the first five episodes are the cutesy romantic comedy arc. At about the end of the fourth episode, the show shows its TRUE colors, as our lead character, Itou decides to pursue a relationship with his girlfriend, Katsura’s best friend, Saionji. After that point, things stop being so cutesy. This turns into a trail of betrayal, grief, and wonderful amounts of backstabbing. It’s ensickening, and if you wanted a cutesy harem, go somewhere else. If you want a morbid drama that doesn’t let go, watch this. Or better, tell your friend this is a cutesy shoujo, and that they should watch it with no idea what it’s about. It’ll be HILARIOUS.

Anyway, characters are okay; I never really got to care for them much. I kinda felt sorry for Katsura, and later Saionji. Itou winds up becoming a teenage Glen Quagmire (heh heh, Awright). Rest of the cast is kinda boring. None of them really do that much to the story. In essence, this is pretty much a three person show. This isn’t a problem, as you learn to love (and later hate) the characters as the series goes on.

Music is relatively solid throughout the series. The opening, however, only suits the series for about four episodes or so, because after that point, the series is no longer the sappy high school romance the opening is implying. Musical scores are nice and enhance the mood in this series quite well.

The best part of the series is the pacing. This one does not want you to watch just one episode. THAT would be forbidden with this series. Many anime decide to have an episode introduce a plot, have it climax toward the middle, and settle down towards the end. This one introduces a plot, plays around with it a bit and WHAM! Something happens that changes everything… and the credits roll, forcing you to watch the next episode. Half of the episodes end with something explosive happening, up to the last one, where it’s so explosive that there’s nowhere left to go.

The ending in this series is well… *shudders* I don’t want to talk about it really. It had tons of buildup, and everything came together in an emotionally intense climax. After the last episode was over, I kinda sat there slack-jawed for about 20 seconds, then my stomach started hurting, and I really wanted to think about something else. Not a happy ending, but a memorable ending. I had it spoiled for me, but seeing it actually happen was not something some spoilers could ruin. It was just awe inspiring.

The main purpose of this anime was obviously a deconstruction of the harem genre as a whole. Rather than some silly ending where everybody is happy for some reason, people actually get hurt by the main characters actions. In the end, you can’t even decide who to root for, due to all of the utter depravity of the situations. If you’re looking for something that decides to invert all of the usual romantic comedy rules, you should pick this up from Netflix (Sorry, DVD’s are kinda rare, so I can’t vouch for them much) or something. I can honestly recommend this series to anybody looking for something deliciously twisted, or just looking for a change of pace.

Anime in Focus: School Days Episode 1

Well, this one was quite interesting. While my local Anime club was deciding what to watch, this anime came up. Half were exited, another half were trying to talk us out of watching it. Hearing that it was a harem that ends badly, I was partially exited, simply because of how sick I am of seeing happy couples get their happy ending. I sometimes like that warm and fuzzy feeling that a lot of shoujo emits, but at the moment,  after I’ve been rejected for the 20,000^th time, seeing a happy couple makes me sick.

Anyhoo, this anime starts with the lead sitting on a train taking a picture of a girl he likes with his phone. Kinda creepy, but whatever. He tries to hide his affection for her from his friends, as typical romantic comedy rules dictate you should. It’s really trying to hard to get you to think this will be a typical romantic comedy. The girl that sits next to him in class finds out, and starts antagonizing him about it. This actually leads to a scene where the lead starts threatening the girl next to him. I found this to be deliciously messed up.

His friends start suggesting that the girl next to him is totally into him. This doesn’t seem true when the girl who sits next to him introduces him to the girl he’s been crushing over…..

She introduces them, and they hit it off quite well….

Later that day though, THIS STUFF GETS REAL

Well, gotta leave some suspense, but the ending to this first episode got me exited.

I also noticed all the girls in this anime have abnormally huge eyes. I don’t have a problem with it, but it’s really noticeable.
